I started with a Vox V847, great for Hendrix sounds. Still use it some 12 years later, though now with an upgraded pot and switch because the old ones only lasted a few years.

There's always the Crybaby, a classic. But I've known several people with them and they also crap out after a couple years, unless there have been improvements in the 2000's.

It may be worth it to spend the extra money for a Vox Clyde or maybe the Budda Budwah, but I don't have experience with them.

Best place in the signal chain is first, in my opinion. A few people like it after the OD, but it's a matter of taste. It generally goes before any modulation or delay pedals.
